PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a square steel material as a column member for a steel house, which is structurally simple and of which the manufacturing process is also comparatively easy and strength is markedly increased. SOLUTION: In this square steel used for the column member for the residence made of steel, sheet steel is bent and formed into a box-shaped sectional form, both ends are seamed by caulking and an external shape (four each side) of 40-120 mm is formed, and U-shaped or V-shaped stiffeners 28, projected to the inside along the longitudinal direction, are formed to the four sides or the two sides of the external shape.
