PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To continuously adjust a presser foot height from a raised position to a pressed position according to the manipulated variable of a foot pedal, start sewing via the operation of the foot pedal, and simplify a foot presser device. SOLUTION: This presser foot device is switched to its raised position when the foot pedal is in a reference position (S1). When the operating position of the foot pedal is to be varied within a range from the reference position to an operated position after work cloth is moved to a sewing position between a bed portion and the foot presser, an output voltage A from a potentiometer is not less than 0 V nor more than v1 (S2 and S3: Yes), the height position of the foot presser can be adjusted to match the operated position of the foot pedal (S4), and positioning can be simplified irrespective of the thickness of the work cloth. A sewing process can be automatically initiated (S7) by simply operating the cloth holder greatly beyond its operated position (S5: Yes).
