PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide highly durable, small and lightweight starter and engine starting device which improves the starting ability when the engine runs at high temperature, which suppresses the generation of noise and which is excellent in the mounting operation to the engine. SOLUTION: Rotational power of a motor 1 is reduced and transmitted to a pinion 10 by a planetary reduction gear 5. On an armature gear 2a of the motor 1, an armature gear 3 which engages with the armature shaft by a spline and which axially slides on the armature shaft 2a, is provided. The armature gear 3 is allowed to engage with a pinion shaft 7 by spring force of a push spring 4, and the motor 1 and the pinion can be directly connected. Further, by driving the armature gear 3 in the axial direction by a solenoid 6 to break away it from the pinion shaft 7, the rotational power of the motor 1 is transmitted to the pinion through the planetary reduction gear 5.
