A hybrid photomultiplier tube includes a photocathode (130), focusing rings (134, 136), a photodiode (132), and a collection anode (120) disposed in a detector body (110). A vacuum envelope (116) encloses a vacuum region betwee n the photocathode (130) and the detector (110). Conductors (152, 154) dispose d on or adjacent to a sidewall of the vacuum envelope (116) reduce the effect of electrical charges on the sidewall of the vacuum envelope (116) on the trajectories of electrons. An ion deflector electrode (167) is disposed adjacent to the photodiode (132) and extends photocathode operational life a nd improves noise factor.
