A method for continuously determining a gaseous halogenated organic compound or hydrogen halide as a contaminant in air or other gas comprises passing the contaminated air or gas continuously through a furnace filled with a palladium catalyst at about 800‹C., wherein the contaminant is burned to a corresponding hydrogen halide, halogen or both, and the combustion products are passed into contact with a bromide-bromate or iodide-iodate mixture in a tube, or through a washer containing an aqueous solution of the respective salts, so that the combustion products are converted to halogen which is then determined. Preferably the bromidebromate or iodide -iodate solution is contained in a galvanic cell which is used for the determination of the halogen. |
