A gas washing bottle comprises a lower vessel 8 containing liquid, an upper vessel 4 extending into the lower vessel and having a pipe 5 terminating in a gas distributor 6 and barrier vessels 3 and 11 partly surrounding the vessels 4 and 8 respectively, the vessel 4 communicating with a gas inlet 1 through ports 16, the barrier vessel 3 and a spray trap 2 and the vessel with a gas outlet 12 via a port 9, pipe 30 and the barrier vessel 11. The apparatus is made in two parts which are connected together by a screwed ground glass joint 27 and gas may flow from the outlet 12 to the inlet 1. In other embodiments the barrier vessel 3 may lie above the vessel 4 and communicate therewith through an open lower end and the port 9 may discharge into an annular chamber surrounding an upper part of the vessel 8 and which communicates with outlet 12 through an open lower end and barrier vessel 11.
