R1 = H, CH3, or -(CH2)r-OR4; R2 = -(CH2)s-OR5; -X-Y = -C(R6)W-, -WC(R6)-, -C(R6)=CH2-, CH2=C(R6)-, -C(O)W-, -WC(O)- or -CH equivalent to CH-; Ar1 = phenyl substituted by R8 and R9, 1-(R7)pyrrolyl, or pyridyl, furyl or thiophenyl (all substituted by R8); Ar2 = phenyl substituted by R11 and R12, 1-(R10)pyrrolyl, or pyridyl, furyl or thiophenyl (all substituted by R11); R3 = -(CH2)tC(R13)(R14)OR15; r, s = 1-2; R4, R5 = H, acetyl, benzoyl, trimethyl silyl, tert butyl dimethyl silyl, or tetrahydro pyranyl; R6 = H or lower alkyl; W = O, S, CH2, or NH optionally substituted by lower alkyl; R7, R10 = H or lower alkyl; R8, R9, R11, R12 = H, lower alkyl, halogen, -OR16, polyether, CF3, NO2, amino, mono- or di-lower alkyl amino; t = 0 or 1; R13, R14 = H, lower alkyl, cycloalkyl, CF3, or C2F5; R15 = H, acetyl, trimethyl silyl, tert butyl dimethyl silyl, or tetrahydropyranyl; and R16 = H or lower alkyl.
