A communication path management system comprising a currently-operating communication path (PH1), a stand-by communication path (PH2) additionally provided to the currently-operating communication path (PH1), nodes (301 to 3012) connected to the currently-operating communication path (PH1) in normal operation and adapted to conduct intercommunication with each other and to conduct re-transmission multiple times if a communication error occurs, a termination node (30e), and a management node (10) which polles the termination node (30e) every predetermined time and switches the communication path from the currently-operating communication path (PH1) to the stand-by communication path (PH2) when a fault of the currently-operating communication path (PH1) is detected from the results of the response, whereby the burden on the managing personnel is lightened, the cost is lowered, and the reliability is improved.
