PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which is used for audio instruments, video instruments and various kinds of information instruments and whose recording layer is composed of a magnetic metal thin film suitable for mass production and showing excellent recording characteristics. SOLUTION: The magnetic metal thin film having a cylindrical crystalline structure consisting of plural columns each of which consists essentially of three parts of an upper part, an intermediate part and a lower part and has at least, one item of magnetic flux density, an inclination from the direction of the thickness of the magnetic metal thin film and oxygen concentration different between the upper part and the intermediate part and between the intermediate part and the lower part is formed by introducing gas to a magnetic metal vapor stream or the magnetic metal thin film vapor-deposited on a non- magnetic substrate from at least two inlets when the magnetic metal thin film is formed on one surface of the non-magnetic substrate by a vacuum deposition method to obtain the magnetic recording medium having the magnetic metal thin film as the recording layer.
