PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cartridge changer which can accurately and speedily cope with a misinsertion although the constitution is decreased in the number of components and simple and inexpensive. SOLUTION: This changer has a detecting means N which detects a cartridge 50 conveyed to the position of a recording and reproducing means C and performs recording and reproducing operation. If the cartridge 50 is inserted in a wrong direction from a loading/unloading position A to a stock means B, a conveying means D performs expected carrying-in operation and then carrying-out operation without conveying the cartridge 50 to the detection position of the detecting means N. The need for various components such as a misinsertion stopping member is eliminated to actualize constitution which is decreased in the number of components and simple and inexpensive. Thus, the misinsertion of the cartridge 50 can accurately and speedily be coped with.
