PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel sheet with marks which are surely visible and harmless at the side of users. SOLUTION: A surface defect detector 3 is provided on an inspection line and the surface defects of a cold-rolled steel sheet 1 are detected and input to a marking controller 5. When the abnormality of the cold-rolled steel sheet is detected in the inspection line and the execution of marking is required, when a manual inputting push-button switch is turned on when the abnormality reaches the reference position, its output is input to the marking controller 5. The rotational speed command and press command of a rotary grinding wheel 7 are imparted from the marking controller 5 to a rotary grinding wheel driving device 6 and also marking command is imparted at a timing of the execution of the marking. The rotary grinding wheel driving device 6 makes the rotary grinding wheel 7 rotate at the rotational speed of a given command and also makes the rotary grinding wheel 7 press against the surface of the cold-rolled steels sheet 1 at the pressure of the given command.
