PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To raise the temperature quickly up to a first target level by setting the pulse width of a first distributed conduction pulse wider than that of a second distributed conduction pulse and to set optimal drive conditions regardless of the difference in supply, e.g. the characteristics of thermal head or the type of ink ribbon or receiving sheet, or the variation of environmental temperature or the temperature of thermal head. SOLUTION: The driver for thermal head comprises an upper limit register PHREG 2 for setting the switching point of two types of strobe pulse, i.e., a plurality of first distributed conduction pulses for raising the temperature of heaters up to a first target level and a plurality of second distributed conduction pulses for raising the temperature of the heaters up to a second target level, and strobe width setting registers 3, 4 for setting the width of the first and second distributed conduction pulses individually.
