PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform recovery operation automatically depending on the nonuse period without requiring a timer means or a backup power supply. SOLUTION: An external unit having a timer means transmits a command, indicative of the start and end of recording operation, along with data indicative of current time. Time data transmitted along with a command indicative of the end of recording operation is stored in a storage means. When a command indicative of the start of recording operation is received, the time when recording operation is not performed is calculated based on the time data stored in the storage means and the time data transmitted along with the command indicative of the start of recording operation (S42), and a recovery processing to be executed prior to recording operation is determined depending on the calculate time (S43).
