PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ignition device for an internal combustion engine having durability of an engine valve on the ignition device with the engine valve or a cylinder head as an electrode and capable of simplifying cooling structure of the cylinder head, improving a cooling property of it and sufficiently making the best use of an advantage of increase of arranging freedom of the engine valve and shortening combustion time of air-fuel mixture. SOLUTION: A piston 10 is electrically connected to a cylinder 3, a suction valve 20 which is an engine valve and an exhaust valve 21 are electrically connected to a cylinder head 4, while the cylinder 3 and the cylinder head 4 are electrically insulated from each other, the cylinder head 4 is made in a high electrical potential state and the cylinder 3 is made in a low electrical potential state on an ignition device of an internal combustion engine 1 on the cylinder head 4 of which an ignition plug is not installed. Additionally, combustible air-fuel mixture in a combustion chamber 12 is ignited by long spark discharge generated between a top surface 11 of the piston 10 and the cylinder head 4, the suction valve 20 or the exhaust valve 21.
