The multimeter has a number of measurement sockets (2-5), control and measurement electronics and at least one display (11). Different measurement functions for electrical parameters are possible using the different measurement sockets. The control and measurement electronics have devices to detect the use of each socket and are formed, so that only the assigned measurement function for the socket is enabled and the other functions are blocked. The measurement and control electronics are formed so that all of the functions are blocked for a non-permitted socket use.
