A device for the alignment of the side position of a main stack of sheets that is provided with a remaining stack carried by a non-stop device for cleaning has the side position of the main stack and of the remaining stack each detected by a sensor device. The side position of the main stack is matched to the side position of the remaining stack by adjusting elements touching the stack carrier carrying the main stack. Not only the side position of the remaining stack (8) but also of the main stack (4) can be detected by a common sampling unit (13). The side position of the remaining stack can be stored as a reference value and that of the main stack compared with it. The difference value resulting from the comparison can be fed to one of the adjusting elements (15) influencing the side position of the main stack.
