PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject membrane slight in thickness unevenness and good in surface smoothness, and to provide a method for producing such a membrane. SOLUTION: This membrane is obtained by the following process: polyoxyethylene is added to an agar- and/or agarose-contg. compound followed by addition of water as necessary, the resultant mixture is made into a sheet- like gel, which is then dried at 0-40 deg.C under a load of 0.01-2 kgf/cm2; alternatively, this membrane can be obtained more efficiently by the following process: one side or both sides of the above sheet-like gel is (are) laminated with porous material and/or water-absorbing material followed by drying the gel at 0-40 deg.C under a load and then removing the porous material and/or water-absorbing material.
