PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide flame retardant polymeric composite materials which are inexpensive and exhibit high flame retardancy, compositions for making the same, and molded products constituted of the flame retardant polymeric composite materials. SOLUTION: Flame retardancy-imparting composite particles 10 having a structure in which a carrier material particle 1 has been compounded with a compound layer 2 containing a silicon component and/or a metallic component and oxygen are dispersed in and/or coated on a substrate (i.e. a target material to be imparted with flame retardancy) composed of a polymeric material such as a resin to fix them on the surface of the substrate and, e.g. when intense heat is given to the target material to be imparted with flame retardancy, high flame retardancy can be imparted to the target material by allowing the compound layer of the flame retardancy-imparting composite particles to form a protective film by the intense heat to inhibit combustion. The effect of formation of the protective film can impart sufficient flame retardancy performance even in a small compounding amount to be incorporated into the target material and as the result, the compounding amount of flame retardants including the composite particles can be reduced.
