PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a filter element for capillary permeation filtration whose filtration capability is not deteriorated even by repeated backwashings with compressed air. SOLUTION: The filter element comprises a supporting body and a filtration layer and the filtration layer has the filtration face and a leaching face and the object liquid to be treated permeates the filtration layer from the filtration face and leaches from the leaching face. Glass wool or nonwoven cloths compressed as a filtration material are used for the filter element so as to compose the filtration layer. The filtration material is so supported by the supporting body as to suppress the deformation in the compression direction and filtration face and the leaching face are kept approximately parallel to the compression direction of the filtration material, that is, the flow direction of the object liquid flowing from the filtration face to the leaching face is set at approximately perpendicular to the compression direction of the filtration material.
