PURPOSE: Provided is a method for manufacturing optically active secondary alcohol which is useful in manufacturing (3S, 1'R)-3-(1'-t-Butyldimethylsilyloxyethyl)-4-acetoxyazetidin-2-one(4-AA) and carbapenem intermediate through asymmetric reduction. CONSTITUTION: A method for manufacturing optically active secondary alcohol of the formula (I) is characterized by the next steps of: i) washing Kluyveromyces marxianus (ATCC 46537) or Lactobacillus kefir (ATCC 35411) with water or pH 6.0-7.5 of buffer solution; and ii) reacting the bacteria with the compound of the formula (II) at 20-40 deg.C, preferably 25-34 deg.C for 2 1/2 hours-72 hours. Wherein, 0.5-3 mg of the compound of the formula (II) is added per 1 ml of the buffer solution. In the formulae, R¬1 is an alkyl or aryl group; R¬2 is an alkyl, aryl group, hydrogen, or alkali metal; and Z is ammonium, amide, imide, or substituted amine group.
