PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively constitute a number plate recognition device through the use of a general-purpose arithmetic unit without newly developing a dedicated arithmetic unit and to precisely segment a plate area at high speed. SOLUTION: A fetched vehicle picture is reduced in a horizontal direction and a vertical direction (A1). As for the reduced picture, the values of respective pixels and the value of the pixel in a position shifted in a positive or negative direction from the pixel by prescribed quantity are operated and binarized. Then, a pseudo shift correlation picture is generated by an AND operation (A2). The respective pixels of the reduced picture and the value of the pixel in the position shifted from the concerned pixel in the positive or negative direction by prescribed quantity are operated/binarized. A pseudo OR picture is generated by an OR operation (A3). The pseudo shift correlation picture is divided into plural small areas and the area of the dinarized pixel is calculated in the small areas and a plate candidate small area is selected (A4). A plate area is temporarily set on the pseudo OR picture based on the pseudo OR picture, adaptability is checked and the plate area is cut (A5). |
