SURFACE MODE LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface mode liquid crystal device having substantially improved viewing angle characteristics while using a birefringent layer having uniform direction of the optical axis. SOLUTION: The surface mode liquid crystal device has a liquid crystal layer having first and second surfaces disposed between a first single-axis birefringent layer and a second single-axis birefringent layer. The liquid crystal layer shows first polarity of the optical anisotropy, while the first single-axis birefringent layer and the second single-axis birefringent layer show the polarity of the optical anisotropy opposite to the first polarity. The device has a uniformly tilted optical axis on each of the first surface and the second surface.
