PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide address cognition method/device for remarkably reducing erroneous recognition at the time of recognizing an address character string. SOLUTION: A picture input part 101 inputs an address character string on a recording medium as picture information and stores it in a buffer 102. A character position cutting part 103 segments a character position with respect to the input picture in the buffer 102 and stores position information in a buffer 104. A character recognition part 105 recognizes a character with respect to respective character position candidates from the input picture in the buffer 102 and position information in the buffer 104 and stores the character candidate in a buffer 106. An address collation part 107 collates an address word in an address dictionary 108 with the character candidate in the buffer 106 and stores an address word candidate in a buffer 109. A character position certification part 110 uses position information in the buffer 104 and the character candidate in the buffer 106, compares the address word candidates in the buffer 109 and outputs the address word candidate without inconvenience to a certification result output part 111.
