The system has the cooling-air flap (32) held closed directly by a retaining or fixing force. This force is produced by a permanent magnet (34) whose force of attraction is adjusted to the pressure difference acting on the flap above a given vehicle speed. ALternatively the force may be produced by an electromagnet controlled by speed and/or engine temp. The magnet or electromagnet has a plastic coating at least over its region of contact. The retaining or fixing force may be produced by a ratchet or by some form of closure. USE/ADVANTAGE - For controlling cooling-air flap on front of vehicle depending on speed pressure and/or engine temp. Simple to build. Flap is only open when cooling air is actually needed; otherwise aerodynamic, low-noise profile is created by closing flap. |
