<p>The present invention provides a method for diagnosing and/or predicting the development of pathology in a mammal, mediated by viral infection, by isolating lymphocytes bearing a selectable marker and identifying among the lymphocytes a population of infected cells. The relative frequency of the mutant cells in the population from a sample can be determined by directly plating cells in the presence of a selection medium. In one embodiment of the invention, the selectable marker is hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (hprt).</p> |
