A control device ensures optimum adjustment of the operating point (UBIAS) and modulation signal (UDAT) of a Mach-Zehnder modulator (4), whereby the fundamental wave and/or the first harmonic wave of the transfer signal (OSM) are selected therefor. Optical adjustment is achieved when the amplitude of the fundamental wave reaches a maximum value and the amplitude of the first harmonic wave reaches a minimum value.
