The travel wire monitoring method uses an image recording device (20) mounted on the electric locomotive (10), providing an image of the travel wire (14) ahead of the locomotive, for comparison with a stored reference image, for detection of a foreign body on the travel wire. The operating drive for the locomotive current take-off device is activated when the compared travel wire images differ from one another, for preventing impact with a foreign body. The angle of the image recording device can be adjusted in dependence on the velocity of the locomotive for determining the distance of the monitored travel wire section ahead of the locomotive. An Independent claim for an electric locomotive travel wire monitoring device is also included.
