PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element forming die constituted to allow the rapid removal of part or the whole of a coating layer, such as a machined layer, which does not exert damage to a forming die base material even in the case of removing the coating layers having a film thickness of >=10μm and a method for regenerating the same. SOLUTION: The optical element forming die has a transfer surface for forming optical elements in part of the base material and the transfer surface includes the machined layer which is formed on the base material, consists essentially of metal and is machined to and with a desired shape and accuracy. An etching stopper layer composed of a material having a low etching rate to an etchant for the machined layer is inserted between the base material and the machined layer.
