PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer in which the temperature of a platen can be brought quickly to a level suitable for printing by detecting the temperature of the platen accurately and cooling or heating the platen in a short time. SOLUTION: A rectangular cylindrical platen 1 is provided with a plurality of temperature sensors 11 for detecting the temperature on the print face 1a thereof and a cooling means, i.e., a fan 14, for suppressing temperature rise on the print face 1a of the platen 1 is provided. When the temperature sensor 11 detects the temperature on the print face 1a exceeding a specified level, the fan 14 is operated to suppress temperature rise on the print face 1a.
