PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for processing caption data are provided to process NTSC caption without the existing NTSC caption decoder chip, thereby simplifying a system and reducing expenses. CONSTITUTION: A caption data separation part(201) parses only caption data included in an ATSC(Advanced Television Systems Committee) bit stream for dividing into NTSC(National Television Standards Committee) caption data and DTVCC(Digital Television Closed Caption) data. A code conversion part(202) converts the NTSC caption data into DTVCC data format. A digital caption processing part(203) analyzes the corresponding command in the DTVCC data outputted from the caption data separation part(201) or the caption data converted at the code conversion part(202) for drawing text across the corresponding coordinates area on a screen(204).
