PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the number of constituent part items of a semiconductor laser having the function of monitoring a light output of laser beams, and to simplify its assembling work. SOLUTION: In a semiconductor laser having a structure in which a laser diode 5 is mounted on a stem 1 via a sub-mount 3, and laser beams LB to be emitted from the laser diode 5 are monitored by a photodiode 4, the photodiode 4 is integrally formed in the sub-mount 3. For example, the sub-mount 3 is formed with semiconductors, and the photodiode 4 is formed to be monolithic in a part of the surface. As compared with the structure in which the photodiode is an individual part, it becomes possible to reduce the number of part items constituting the semiconductor laser, and to decrease the number of assembling steps. Furthermore, if a laser diode 5 is positioned to the sub-mount 3, it is simultaneously positioned to the photodiode 4, and relative positional accuracy and the laser diode 5 to the photodiode 4 can be enhanced.
