The device has a light source with a luminous arc (1), a collector (2) with a field stop (3), an intermediate stop (4) and a condenser (5). In the event of displacement of the luminous arc (1) into the position (1'), its image (6') is produced in the intermediate stop. By arranging a horizontal gap in the intermediate stop (4) the effective radiance (b'h) therein remains constant. This has the consequence that the radiance in the object plane is independent of the relative position of the luminous arc. The illuminating device can be used in interferometers, spectral photometers, fluorescence photometers and double-beam photometers. <IMAGE>
