An oxygen scavenger composition comprises a mixture of hydroxosulfitometalate and a transition metal compound having a transition metal component. The hydroxosulfitometalate (HSM) has the formula MIMII2OH(SO3)2.H2O wherein MI represents a monovalent cation and MII represents a divalent cation and is present in from 0.05 to 90 weight percent of the composition The transition metal compound is present in the mixture in an amount such that the molar ratio of HSM to transition metal is from 3000:1 to 1:1. The above oxygen scavenger composition is used in a method of scavenging oxygen from the interior atmosphere of a closed container and in a container having an interior cavity suitable to contain an oxygen sensitive material.
