The remote-control system has a hand-held transmitter (1) used for transmitting coded information to a receiver installed in the automobile over a relatively large distance, with an onboard transmitter (14) used for transmitting a codeword to the hand-held transmitter over a relatively short distance, for storage in a memory (17). The codeword is transmitted to the onboard receiver upon operation of the hand-held transmitter, for verification by comparison with a codeword held in an onboard memory, before the function of the engine (7) can be controlled via the received coded information.
