TREATMENT OF RESPIRATORY DISEASES AND INFECTIONS

It has been found that influenza virus, particularly its haemagglutinin protein, causes inhibition of Na+ ion channels in respiratory epithelium. This observation has allowed for the development of novel methods for (i) treating and/or preventing symptoms associated with viral or bacterial infection (e.g. rhinnorhea, otitis media and/or pulmonary oedema), (ii) treating and/or preventing airway mucous obstructions (e.g. such as those associated with cystic fibrosis, asthma, bronchitis or bronchiecstasis), and (iii) treating diseases characterised by overactivity of epithelial Na+ ion channels (e.g. hypertension).
