PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for applying a coating material in the dark by which coating can excellently be carried out in the case of carrying out coating in a dark place of such as ships, bridges, general buildings, thermal power plants. SOLUTION: This coating material application method is for coating the surface of an object to be coated using a coating material which makes it possible to visually judge the necessary film thickness of the object based on the coating shielding capability at the time when the object to be coated such as ships, general buildings, thermal power plants, in a dark place at night. Coating is carried out while light being radiated from a light 6 after a luminous pigment is applied to the surface of a steel material 11 of the object to be coated.
