PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a compressed wood which is highly stable in size and hardly deformable under an atmospheric pressure and can be manufactured in a short time without impairing the unique wood feel of the wood. SOLUTION: This method for manufacturing a compressed wood used as a building material is to impregnate a wood with a high boiling point organic liquid having a wood swelling function and a boiling point of about 20 deg.C or more and perform the high temperature heating process of the wood at 180-200 deg.C under an atmospheric pressure while keeping the wood swollen. When the wood is impregnated with the high boiling point organic liquid, the liquid is heated and is a stock solution or an aqueous solution of glycols such as glycerin. In addition, an acid such as sulfuric acid, a dibasic acid such as maleic acid, succinic acid or phthalic acid and an anhydride thereof or a hydroxide such as sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide, or an alkaline catalyst as a catalyst, are added to the high boiling point organic liquid.
