A jaw assembly is provided for gripping a wellbore tubular (116). The jaw assembly comprises: a plurality of gripping members (110) each having a substantially circular cross-section; and a gripping member support structure (113, 117) including a plurality of gripping member retainer recesses (112) spaced apart along a longitudinal axis of the gripping member support structure (113, 117). Each of the recesses (112) includes a first ramp surface and a second ramp surface that are oblique relative to the longitudinal axis of the gripping member support structure (113, 117). Each recess (112) is configured to hold at least one gripping member (110), and the at least one gripping member (110) is capable of moving along the ramped surfaces. The jaw assembly can operate as a slip. |
