PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state image pickup device that can control a minimum charge storage time of a photo diode to be less than 1H (horizontal period) so as to make a very fast electronic shutter operation. SOLUTION: This solid-state image pickup device is provided with an image pickup area where unit cells 1 are arranged two-dimensionally, a plurality of read lines 4 that are placed horizontally corresponding to each pixel row in the image pickup area and used to transmit a read driven signalϕREADi to drive each read means Td of the unit cells of the corresponding pixel rows, a vertical drive means 2a that selectively supplies the read drive signal to a plurality of the read lines to drive the read means, and 1st and 2nd row selection means 2, 20 that control the vertical drive means of each pixel row based on 1st and 2ndϕROREAD,ϕESREAD respectively.
