PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader employing a fluorescent lamp where damage to the fluorescent lamp due to a leakage current is prevented and an image can stably be read. SOLUTION: A motor 6 drives a lamp mount stand on which a xenon lamp 9 emitting a light to an original and a reflection mirror are mounted to scan the original. Furthermore, a lamp state detection section 3 detects a lighting state of the xenon lamp 9. In the case that a CPU 4 applies lighting control to the xenon lamp 9, when the lamp state detection section 3 detects lighting of the xenon lamp 9, the operation of the motor 6 is permitted and when the lamp state detection section 3 detects the extinguished state of the xenon lamp 9, the operation of the motor 6 is inhibited.
