SUBSTANCE: described is method of preparing alpha- hydroxy acids by heating ammonium salts of alpha-hydroxy acids of general formula I: R-CH(OH)-COO-NH+4 wherein R is C1-C6 alkyl which is substituted by thioalkyl group, or phenyl removing the resulting ammonia and water and optionally organic solvent, subsequently adding water to residue and heating the resulting mixture. Method makes it possible to prepare free alpha-hydroxy acids from ammonium salts thereof using efficient method, and high yield of product is attained.
