PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display in which the incident light is not related specularly with the reflected light passing the display. SOLUTION: The incident light enters the display at the angle in a prescribed range while the reflected light, namely the visible direction, is controlled to a right or near a right angle to the display. The angle of a polarizing plate, input/output director of a liquid crystal cell and retardation of the liquid crystal cell of the non-specular liquid crystal display should be specially optimized to obtain the optimum visual effect. A conventional liquid crystal display mode does not function as the optimum in the non-specular state. A non-specular liquid crystal display with a new image mode and a shadow mode is obtained by this method. The display has an extremely bright background and no visible glare which is almost general for any liquid crystal display. The method can be used for all twist angles in a 90 deg. TN, 120 deg. and 150 deg. HTN, and 180 deg., 240 deg. and 270 deg. STN display or the like. |
