A pressure-proof furnace for burning refuse and aqueous sewage sludges is fitted with a gas-scrubbing installation which is situated in its interior and through which the gases and vapours produced by oxidation under increased pressure are forced. As a consequence of the water content of the waste to be burnt, steam is immediately produced. Heat for hot-water generators, superheating steam, preheating air and superheating flue gas upstream of gas turbines can additionally be coupled out via heat exchangers situated in the furnace.
