PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a process of display characteristics by optimizing the intra-plane anchoring energy of two counter substrates in a liquid crystal display element. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display element wherein a liquid crystal is interposed on two counter substrates through alignment layers, the azimuth anchoring energy of the liquid crystal of the alignment layer on one substrate is specified to be lower than that of the alignment layer on the other substrate.
