PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To find a range with higher precision by widening the conditions of a scene wherein a range can be found by increasing the degree of freedom of design by enabling various light sources to be used by relaxing conditions of projection of light. SOLUTION: An LED 13 projects light on a photographic picture plane, a line sensor 12A photodetects reflected light of the projection light from a subject positioned in the photographic picture plane, and a CPU 18 judges the position of the subject in the photographic picture plane from the output signal of the line sensor 12A. At this time, the distribution of peaks and bottoms of a projection light distribution is previously stored in an EEPROM 22 so that the judging operation can be performed while unevenness of the distribution of the quantity of the light projected by the LED 13 is corrected. If a main subject can not be detected by the LED light emission, a stroboscopic light emission part 14 which has a larger quantity of light enough to make the light reach a subject at a long distance is used. In this case, no correction is made. |
