Oligomeric ligands, such as cysteine knot growth factors, can be displayed o n the surface of viral particles as recombinant fusion proteins. The recombina nt fusion proteins can be used to screen for drugs which will inhibit binding o f an oligomeric ligand to its receptor and for targeting transferable labels, including therapeutic gene products, to cells bearing a receptor specific fo r the oligomeric ligand.
