The deflector has two deflector plates (1, 2) between a crankshaft (3) and oil sump (4) overlapping one another to form a channel and with at least a longitudinal edge (6) of the second plate forming a main stripper edge (7). Rib strips (19) or other suitable means are provided in the overlapping area between the plates to direct the oil towards a suction point (11) formed in the sump. The oil deflector plates extend over part of the length of the sump and at least one plate can be formed integral with the sump.
