The airbag has a reinforcing band, acting as diffuser, to prevent direct contact between hot gases and airbag material. The reinforcing band (12) is fastened with one end to a first wall section (14) of a housing (10) for the gas generator (11). It encloses the gas generator with a diffuser section (13), and extends and is fastened to the opposite wall section (17) of the housing. The reinforcing band has a cover section (18) next to the diffuser section, which engages over the folded airbag (19) towards the first housing wall section, where it is fastened.
