A cable core (2) is enclosed in a cable sheath (4) containing yarns (6) of fire resistant resin staple fibers, in particular melamine or phenolic resin fibers. Independent claims are made for: (a) a process for manufacturing the flame-resistant cable in which the cable core (2) is produced, a yarn of melamine or phenolic resin staple fibers is spun around it and a cable sheath (4) of a lightweight, flame resistant material is applied to the yarn (6); (b) an alternative process in which a core is produced, a fabric or fleece layer of yarns based on staple fibers of melamine or phenolic resin is wound around it and overlapped before a lightweight cable sheath is applied.
