Mixing process uses an extruder followed by a mixer, one or both of which can be used depending on the charge size. An extruder (1) is followed by a heated mixer (6) with rotors (8) which can be driven in both directions and have conveying (12) and mixing (13) elements (12,13). For producing large batches raw materials are fed to the extruder and the mixer rotors are driven in a conveying direction towards the outlet. For small charges raw materials are fed directly to the heated mixer(6) whose rotors are driven in a mixing direction. After mixing both rotors are rotated in a conveying direction. An Independent claim is made for a rubber mixing plant comprising an extruder (1) and a mixer (6). The mixer inlet (5) is connected directly to the extruder outlet (4). The mixer has an additional feeding shaft (10) and two or more rotors (8) which can be driven in both directions.
